History

Rock It Science had its humble beginnings in April of 2005. Eric Sharp had met the legendary pioneer Roy Davis Jr at Winter Music Conference in Miami that March and they immediately bonded over their passion for music. Roy was coming to San Francisco for a gig shortly thereafter, so he and Eric schemed to organize an underground afterhours party titled Afterglow in a warehouse known as Infinite Kaos. The next morning Eric woke up with the phrase Rock It Science stuck in his head, and decided that he would coin the term to present the party. With 3 days of promotions using nothing but 1-sided flyers printed with black ink on white card stock, the party was packed to the brim with music lovers and dance music industry afficianados and raged until 7 am.

From there Rock It Science quickly gained a following, producing a string of epic warehouse parties. Eric Sharp’s DJ career then began to take off with guest spots in every relevant SF venue, leading to higher profile gigs and residencies. Rock It Science evolved into a DJ crew with a strong local presence working with many major acts such as Diplo, Green Velvet, Louie Vega, Afrika Bambaataa, Talib Kweli, Dubtribe Sound System, and Derrick Carter to name a few and performing at major events such as Amsterdam Dance Event, Symbiosis Gathering, Burning Man, and LovEvolution. Native Intelligence joined the fun in 2006, quickly cementing himself as a core member of the team through hard work and unstoppable DJ skills.

Realizing that merely DJing and producing local events would only go so far, Mr. Sharp and Native Intelligence began working in the studio learning to produce music of their own. These tracks were very well received and got spins from major artists such as Drop The Lime, Roy Davis Jr and more. Shortly thereafter, Eric decided that having built a successful local event brand and DJ career from the ground up it was time to create something much larger that would grow out of this foundation and passion, enabling the crew to generate a global following. The idea to launch a music label was born, and work began towards the creation of Rock It Science Laboratories.

In 2008 Eric reached out to DJ Fame, the first US producer to release music on Switch’s massive Dubsided imprint, and brought him out to SF to perform. The two hit it off with immediate synergy behind the decks and similar taste in music and made plans to work together on a track as soon as possible. This took place the next time Fame made it out to San Francisco for a Rock It Science event resulting in a musical composition that seamlessly fused their styles and tastes. The writing was clearly on the wall and DJ Fame was welcomed to the Rock It Science Laboratories family.

Meanwhile Eric and Native Intelligence had both been collaborating on tracks with Bass Cadet, another burgeoning producer and already established DJ. Bass Cadet had built his credibility through manning the Purgatory Cruiser, a fantastical vehicular creation that raged each year at Burning Man complete with an on-board DJ booth, slamming sound system, flame-throwers, and hordes of steam-punk styled revelers. Impressed with Bass Cadet’s next level production skills, shared musical passion and charisma, the crew gladly welcomed him as Rock It Science Laboratories’ most recent addition.

Today Rock It Science Laboratories holds down a weekly event on Friday nights at Temple Nightclub, one of SF’s most respected and coveted venues with weekly guests from across the globe. The response to the forthcoming EPs to be released has been extraordinarily positive with respected producers such as Santiago & Bushido, DZ, Dubtribe’s Sunshine Jones, and The Flying Skulls jumping at the chance to remix tracks. Rock It Science Laboratories is ready to make its mark on the world of music, soaring into the future with its mission of Dance Music Development.
